Opening and Saving Locally (using BSML)

First off, what is BSML??
BSML stands for Bioinformatic Sequence Markup Language.

BSML allows for a standard method of saving and accessing information, which we have chosen to use because we avoid the use of proprietary formats. A BSML file is a human-readable file that follows the standards of the XML format (http://www.w3.org/XML/) with additional formatting specific to Bioinformatics applications.

NOTE: since the time when GANT was initially created, the BSML file format has not been as widely adopted as originally thought. You may still safely save and re-open BSML files within GANT, however, the BSML file may not be understood by other programs. The file is, however, human readable just like the XML format. We will be working to provide additional saving options in the future that may be more beneficial to our GANT users.

Saving Information to a BSML File

To save everything currently open in GANT, simply choose "Save to file..." from the "File" menu:

All the information currently open in the GANT browser (including the entire gene, annotation, primers, and even custom annotation) will be saved to the BSML file.

Opening from a BSML File

If you have previously saved a gene to a BSML file using GANT, then you may re-open the gene by choosing "Open file..." from the "File" menu:

Everything that was visible in GANT when the file was saved will again be loaded and available in your GANT gene browser.
