The completion of the sequencing of the human genome has provided the world with an abundance of information that holds significant research potential. To unravel the secrets contained in the sequences of human DNA, researchers need to rely on computers to analyze this vast amount of data. Efficient use and analysis of this data requires advances in computing technology. Computing hardware has improved tremendously in the recent decades, resulting in increased computer power and speed. However, these advances are useless to researchers without similar advances in programming techniques and software algorithms.
Bio::Neos has already established working relationships with research groups throughout the nation, some of which are return customers. From these relationships, there are currently identifiable products that have great potential for scalability. One custom product, Bio::POD, has already been commercialized and is now available on the market as an off-the-shelf software product. It contains a unique technology that no other software product has: the Prioritization of Annotation Regions (PAR) algorithm. PAR provides researchers with a new method to analyze data for the mutation discovery process and offers unparalleled increases in efficiency. Bio::Neos recently began a strategic marketing initiative that will put the software in the hands of more genetic researchers , providing valuable feedback to help evolve future releases as well as reach new markets.
The success of Bio::Neos in this biology focused software field is made possible by the expertise of the Bio::Neos executive team. This team is highlighted by some of the foremost mutation identification and bioinformatics researchers in the nation from the Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (CBCB) at the University of Iowa. Through this relationship with prominent researchers, such as Dr. Thomas Casavant, Bio::Neos will be able to make a lasting impact on the bioinformatics software market. A rapid development cycle, an advantageous location, and insight into new algorithms and advanced research techniques all combine to give Bio::Neos a competitive advantage in this target market.
Bioinformatics is a young and growing field and Bio::Neos was created at the onset of this continually expanding market. In 2005, Kalorama Information reported that $180 million in 2004 was spent on bioinformatics solutions created for drug discovery alone. Growing at a rate of 7% annually, this number is expected to reach $237 million in 2008 and still does not take into account the growing need for informatics solutions in other areas of the life sciences. The following table summarizes to-date financials combined with 3-year projections:
| 2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009 |
| Revenue | $12,000 | $64,000 | $165,000 | $330,000 |
Dedicated marketing for custom software consulting began in the third quarter of 2006. Year 2006 was the beginning of full-time commitment by the executive-team with much time spent on marketing efforts and the first consulting job. Custom software contracts for the current fiscal year have increased nearly five-fold over the previous year and will result in a more than ten-fold increase in revenue. Increased custom contracts coupled with potential sales from the development of packaged products establish projections for the years 2007, 2008 and 2009.
It has become clear that mere access to data is not the panacea for biomedical questions. Without strong analytical tools and sufficient computational resources, biological research is severely limited. To overcome this limitation more intelligent and sophisticated bioinformatics algorithms and software are needed. With an energetic work ethic and experienced executive team, Bio::Neos is poised to become an increasingly important supplier of bioinformatics software worldwide.
